| NoRBEC Client Success Case Study
Renewable Energy & Energy Solutions
Headquartered in the heart of Lismore and serving the Northern Rivers region is Nickel Renewable Energy (NRE), a very progressive and professional company that specialises in the design, supply and installation of quality solar energy power systems.
NRE’s Renewable Energy systems are designed for direct connection to the electricity grid, meaning customers benefit from the resultant tariffs. Their solar energy systems are tailored to each customer’s current and future needs by a professionally qualified engineer. It means that not only do the systems offer maximum useful life – they can also be upgraded and expanded in the future as required.
Nick Lake, Director believes NRE’s success has been based upon four key strategies, these being:
- Professional and local – with guaranteed workmanship, product and easy local access
- Skills and personable – industry specific professionals, training and experience
- Solution oriented – customised design that provides the best solution to the customer
- Value adding for the long term

“NRE is here for the long term, and thus we offer only products and systems that will be operating, and be compatible with future system upgrades and expansion” said Nick Lake. "We choose to supply only quality solar panels, predominately from the USA or reputable Asian suppliers, Our inverters (to convert DC to AC power) for home use or supply to the electricity grid are sourced from Germany, the world leader in this technology" commented Mr Lake.
NRE maximises its regional content through the purchase of local framing products and installation supplies where possible.
NRE’s customers come from a wide range of locations in the Mid and Northern Rivers region of NSW. Customers benefit from their professional and personable approach to explaining the benefits of solar power, government assistance schemes, and offering the "complete package".
NRE has enjoyed rapid expansion. In recognition of this the company’s owners and senior managers are building relevant management and reporting systems to increase their professionalism and productivity. In this regard Nick Lake is working with Chris Thomson from the Northern Rivers Business Enterprise Centre (NORBEC) to identify relevant human resource strategies and employee incentive schemes to provide the stability and direction required to maintain this growth.
"Dealing with Chris is providing us with a valuable source of professional advice on NRE’s specific needs. Integral to these needs is Chris’s experience and the strategic approach he takes to our business development needs" said Mr Lake.
In addition, NORBEC Business Advisors are able to assist in many parts of their client’s business. "Chris has introduced us to opportunities such as mentoring which I’m sure we will benefit significantly from in the future".

Lessons from the School of Hard Knocks (Courtesy Mark Moore)
Which is more effective, the school of hard knocks, or purposeful learning of theory up front to avoid making mistakes?
Personally, and this might sound odd, I love making mistakes. I practically welcome them, because I know they make me stronger. They’re almost an investment in learning. I make calculated decisions, and move forwards being open to the fact that I could be wrong and ready to learn if I am. I don’t let loss of confidence affect me, because I remove that element from my decisions. I make my decisions based on what I should be doing in my work for the highest returns (financially, mentally and emotionally). Then I question my confidence levels and if I have to, I deal with them separately.
I’m happy to make mistakes, but here’s the thing; I prefer to learn voraciously up front and not make those mistakes. I’d rather learn from my wins than my losses. If mistakes can be prevented, I’d like to know about it.
Many people are proud of learning from experience rather than learning from theory. I think pride should only be derived from doing both. I learn from people who have made mistakes before me, I reflect on it, I emotionalise the lesson by vividly imagining the impact on my life, business and family if I was to make that mistake, and then I act and go for the experience part, and hopefully it’s a positive, lucrative, highly rewarding one! Regardless, I learn from it.
(Mark Moore is the Director of Excelerated Performance International. He helps people to close the skills and knowledge gaps that they face, much faster, and manage themselves more effectively in order to achieve their business goals)

Small Business Superannuation
The Minister for Superannuation, Chris Bowen MP, and Minister for Small Business, Craig Emerson MP, have announced that the Government will deliver its free superannuation clearing house service for small business through Medicare Australia.
The clearing house service will be available for small businesses with less than 20 employees from July 2010.
"To meet their choice of fund obligations, small businesses currently face the time and paperwork burden of paying contributions into numerous funds. The super clearing house will cut this red tape burden by enabling small businesses to pay their superannuation contributions electronically to a single location," Minister Bowen said.
"Medicare Australia is well placed as one of the Commonwealth Government’s key service delivery agencies – with significant electronic and payment processing capacity whilst ensuring the privacy of information and the security of funds."
Key features of the superannuation clearing house for participating small businesses include:
Superannuation contributions made to numerous funds will be electronically paid to a single location (the clearing house) which will process the transactions;
Small businesses that choose to use the clearing house service will have their legal obligation to make superannuation contributions discharged when payment of the correct amount is made to the clearing house;
The clearing house facility will be offered free of charge to small businesses with less than 20 employees; and
The clearing house will manage employers’ choice of fund obligations.
